Implantable, MEMS-based, Multimodal Neural Interfaces for Brain Research

Abstract: Implantable neuroprosthetic devices are valuable engineering tools that enable transformative understanding of dynamic signaling in the nervous systems. In this talk, I will go over our recent development of neural interface implants for multimodal stimulation and sensing of brain activity. Three devices fabricated using microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technologies will be discussed. In the first example, I will talk about a wireless Opto-μECoG array that integrates epidural LEDs and transparent microelectrodes on a polymer platform for cortical neuromodulation and neural recording in freely moving animals. The second example is a free-floating, single-channel optical stimulator consisting of a reflector-coupled µLED and a mm-sized receiver (Rx) coil for wirelessly-powered, optogenetics neuromodulation. In a third example, boron-doped polycrystalline diamond electrodes are transferred onto flexible polymer substrates for neurotransmitter sensing. The efficacy of the above devices has been demonstrated in vitro or in vivo in the rat models.
