Look long and deep: New approaches to understanding human brain function using sheep as large animal models

Sheep are now rarely used as experimental models for studying brain function. This is more due to prejudice than reason, since with their large brains and amenable natures sheep make excellent laboratory subjects for studying brain and behaviour. In this talk, I will describe some of the methods we have developed to use sheep as experimental models of human neurological disease. I will present some of the challenges that we have overcome, and demonstrate how sheep can be used effectively for behavioural and structural imaging studies. Finally, I will present some results from on-going electrophysiological studies in which we are using sheep as models for studying brain function in both health and disease.

Short bio: Professor of Neurobiology at Cambridge University, England. She is based in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, and Professor Morton is Director of Studies in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Newnham College.
