Techno-Mimesis: Design thinking and human-AI interaction

Start date: 19/09/2019
Start time: 08:00 pm
End time: 10:00 pm
Organizer: Nexus Experiments
Location: Hansastr.9a, 79104 Freiburg

The overarching goals of the workshop is to explore human-AI interaction through artistic and practical
engagement to identify important features for human-centered experience design of AI technology.
In order to also address the level of practical engagement with AI in everyday life and from aspects of
responsible design, we will use a method called Techno-Mimesis (see Fig. 1) from the fields of design
thinking / human-technology interaction studies (Bjögvinsson, Ehn, and Hillgren 2012). For this method,
participants are divided into smaller groups and jointly design a fictional AI system in the sense of a design
fiction / speculative design, e.g. a social robot for rehabilitation. The next step is to "transform" a member
of the group with materials (cardboard, cables, etc.) into the AI system and then interact in realistic scenarios
with other members of the group a role play that includes human-AI interaction. The participants document
this process and exchange their experiences in the respective roles; finally, the experiences of the respective
groups are exchanged. Finally, the results from the debriefing and group discussion
