Crafting an Academic Career in Research-Focused (R1) and Education-Focused Higher Education Institutions in the US and CA

Start date: 24/06/2025
Start time: 02:30 pm
End time: 03:30 pm
Organizer: BrainLinks-BrainTools
Location: IMBIT, NEXUS Lab, Georges-Köhler-Allee 201

Dr. Alan Chiu will explore the intertwined paths of research, education, and career development as a faculty member in biomedical engineering. In this seminar, he will summarize his two decades of neural engineering research on oscillator-based neural models and machine learning to predict and control neuronal activities, as well as brain-computer interface assistive devices. He will trace key milestones from benchtop neural models to real-time, closed-loop control strategies to illustrate how a focused research idea evolves over generations of academia. Drawing on experience at both R1 and primarily undergraduate institutions, Dr. Chiu will share scalable course modules and research activities in brain-computer interface suitable for the knowledge and timeline of undergraduate students. Finally, the seminar will discuss academic careers in the U.S. and Canada. Topics include crafting a cohesive research, teaching, and service statement, tenure and promotion expectations, and various research funding sources. Dr. Chiu will also discuss professional services that amplify career impact.
