New technologies for interfacing the human brain
Abstract: In recent years we have witnessed an exponential growth of scientific publications on brain-machine or brain-computer interfaces. This was not matched by a parallel explosion of clinical applications. Why? In our talk we will discuss advantages and critical issues in designing artificial interfaces with the human brain, dealing specifically with the signal quality, the electrical stimulation, the biocompatibility. Finally, we will discuss the utility problem: what would really improve the quality of life of a severely incapacitated patient?
