Title:

A Peek into MR-Safety of Cochlear Implants

Abstract:

Cochlear Implants (CI) are the most successful neural prosthesis providing acoustic sensation to more than a million users worldwide. Half of them had been implanted as children with the prospect to develop nearly normal language.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can obtain detailed structural information of living tissue non-invasively and has become invaluable for a wide and growing number of effective therapies in modern medicine. Consequently, patients with CIs are likely to require MRI in their lifetime. However, interactions between MRI and CIs can have serious consequences for the patient. The transition from not scanning such patients towards finding ways to scan whenever there may be significant benefit to the patient has been ongoing for decades. What makes it so difficult? What could bring relief for patients, implant industry and related scientific applications?
