The trained eye of software: Face recognition and machine learning

Lecture and discussion with Dr. Joschka Bödecker and Herbert Maier

The human ability to recognize and distinguish faces and forms plays a key role in our social life. Computer scientists develop learning algorithms which process complex visual information in a similar way. Dr. Joschka Bödecker, machine learning expert and member of BrainLinks-BrainTools will explain how such algorithms are used in different applications. He is also interested in how this technology changes the perspective of the computer in a world of big data as well as human self-perception itself. After the talk audience and speakers can discuss ethical questions raised by these insights with painter Herbert Maier in regard to his current exhibition “wer wir sind”. At the beginning of the event the artist will guide the visitors through his “visual library”.

This evening is part two of a lecture series jointly organized by the Museum für Neue Kunst and cluster of excellence BrainLinks-BrainTools. The talks address the question “How does the brain interpret images?” from different scientific angles. The lecture series takes place in the context of the exhibition “HERBERT MAIER. wer wir sind”.
